How to use Pho-Nominal Broth

In a large pot, combine 2 quarts of your favorite stock or bone broth with one packet of Pho-Nominal Broth Mix. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce to low and simmer gently for 30 minutes. Strain the broth to remove the spices. Enjoy as a sipping broth, or add your favorite protein, noodles, and garnishes for a classic pho bowl.

Spice 101

Pho-Nominal Broth is crafted to transport your taste buds to the vibrant heart of Asia. Each ingredient is carefully selected to contribute to the broth's complex, umami-rich profile, which is both mushroomy and exotically spiced. It’s a salt-free concoction that promises a fantastic flavor journey with every sip.

Pho-Nominal Broth draws its inspiration from the traditional Vietnamese Pho, a staple that has warmed souls and filled bellies across generations. Pho's origins can be traced back to the early 20th century in Northern Vietnam, near Hanoi. The dish was a melding of local Vietnamese ingredients and French culinary practices, emerging during the French colonial period. The spices in Pho-Nominal Broth, such as star anise and cinnamon, are traditional to Southeast Asian cooking and have been used for centuries not only in Vietnam but across the continent to add depth and warmth to dishes.

The blend's use of black cardamom and long pepper introduces a robust, smoky flavor that is less common in traditional pho but is celebrated in other regional cuisines of Asia. Black cardamom, for instance, is often used in Indian and Nepalese dishes for its intense aroma and a smoky character that complements meats and hearty stews. This fusion of spices reflects the cultural tapestry of Asia, where each region has its unique twist on similar ingredients.

We love Pho-Nominal Broth for its rich layers of flavor that make every sip a discovery. The earthy tones from porcini pieces combined with the aromatic allure of star anise and the smoky whispers of black cardamom create a broth that’s not just food but an experience. We use it as a base for everything from simple sipping broths on a chilly evening to elaborate meals loaded with noodles, fresh herbs, and slices of tender meat. It’s our go-to for a quick, flavorful foundation that feels both nourishing and indulgently satisfying.

You can use our Pho-Nominal Broth Mix to enhance homemade broth or take a shortcut by infusing it into ready-made broth for a quick, flavorful boost!
