History

Across different cultures, saffron's uses have varied, reflecting its status as a luxury item. In India, it is a key ingredient in biryanis and desserts, while in the Middle East, it flavors savory breads and rich stews. The spice was so valued that it was often used as currency, and its cultivation was a closely guarded secret. The labor-intensive process of harvesting saffron, which involves hand-picking the delicate stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower, only adds to its mystique and high price.
