Earl Grey

FloralMaltyCitrusy

Fine black tea provides a perfect base for the intense citrus notes to shine. High quality bergamot oil makes this a truly superior Earl Grey and the one exception to our "no-oils!" policy when it comes to leaf tea. We love it as-is, but adventurous palates can add a bit of lavender flower for an interesting twist.

Brewing Instructions: Steep 1-2 teaspoons per cup at 205°F- 212°F for 3-5 minutes. Enjoy up to 2 steepings!

Tea 101

Our Earl Grey stands out due to its use of high-quality bergamot oil, which is a notable exception to our "no-oils" policy concerning leaf tea. This oil, extracted from the rind of bergamot oranges, imparts a deep citrus flavor that perfectly complements the robustness of fine black tea. This blend is particularly beloved for its bright, full-bodied flavor profile that can stand alone or be enhanced with a touch of lavender for a floral twist.

Earl Grey tea, a distinguished blend known for its vibrant aroma and citrusy allure, owes its existence to the early 19th-century British Prime Minister, Charles Grey. Legend has it that the tea was a gift from a Chinese diplomat to Lord Grey, blended to suit the water at his estate, which had a distinct flavor from the local lime. However, this romantic origin story is likely apocryphal. More realistically, the tea's creation was a savvy marketing effort by British tea merchants, capitalizing on the exotic appeal of bergamot oil from Italy. Across different cultures, Earl Grey has been embraced uniquely; in the West, it's often enjoyed with milk and sugar, while other cultures might pair it with spices or make iced versions.

We love our Earl Grey for its perfect balance of flavors. The high-quality bergamot oil infuses the tea with distinctive citrus notes and adds complexity to the black tea base. Whether served warm or as a refreshing iced tea, it’s an essential choice for any tea lover.

Did you know that Earl Grey was supposedly used by the Prime Minister himself as a political tool? It's said that Charles Grey would offer this distinct tea to his guests at political gatherings, using its unique flavor as a conversation starter and a subtle nod to his refined tastes.
