Worcestershire

UmamiSourEarthy

Powdered Worcestershire. Who knew? Everyone knows about the complex flavor of Worcestershire sauce, but few find it in this powdered form for use in spice blends and rubs. It's a secret kick in many BBQ rubs, can be lightly dusted on steaks, and makes the best teriyaki base you'll ever find.

We love it even more because it’s vegan, gluten free, and soy free! The base of Worcestershire is tamarind which is sweet and sticky, which means that it hydrates easily and has a tendency to cake up. Be sure that you store this one in an airtight jar in a cool, non-humid environment. Once you open it, be sure not to leave it exposed to fresh air so you can keep it in its powdered form for as long as possible.

Spice 101

Our Worcestershire powder is a dehydrated form of the traditional Worcestershire sauce, known for its complex flavor profile that enhances meats, soups, and marinades. This vegan, gluten-free, and soy-free version is crafted from ingredients like maltodextrin, distilled vinegar, molasses, and tamarind, ensuring it maintains the classic taste with a convenient twist.

The story of Worcestershire sauce begins in the early 19th century in the city of Worcester, England. Originally concocted by two chemists, John Wheeley Lea and William Henry Perrins, the sauce was an attempt to replicate a flavor described by a nobleman returning from his travels in Bengal. The initial batch was deemed unpalatable and was abandoned in the cellar. Rediscovered years later, the aged sauce had fermented and mellowed into the complex, savory condiment we know today. This powdered form of Worcestershire retains the essence of the original liquid but offers a new versatility in culinary applications.

Across different cultures, Worcestershire sauce has been adapted and integrated into various cuisines. In Japan, it's transformed into a tangier, slightly sweeter version known as "Tonkatsu sauce," used predominantly for fried foods. In the U.S., it's a staple in Bloody Mary cocktails and barbecue rubs, showcasing its wide-ranging adaptability and appeal.

It's perfect for adding a punch to BBQ rubs or a subtle depth to homemade teriyaki. Sprinkle it on steaks or whisk it into dressings; its ability to dissolve well makes it a kitchen essential. Plus, its vegan credentials mean it's a hit with everyone at the table.

To keep your Worcestershire powder from clumping and becoming unusable, make sure to store it in an airtight container! Exposure to moisture can cause it to solidify, so seal it tight for long-lasting flavor.
