Keemun

MaltyWarmEarthy

This Keemun is one tea we have consistently liked year after year and for good reason: the subtle smoky character is balanced by the smallest hint of sweetness. If you were to travel back in time a few hundred years, this tea would be sold pure as classic "English Breakfast," but in modern times it is blended with other teas from India to make some of the hundreds of recipes on the market.

Brewing Instructions: Steep 1-2 teaspoons per cup at 205°F- 212°F for 3-5 minutes

Tea 101

Keemun is celebrated for its soft, round mouthfeel and well-balanced flavor, characterized by a subtle smokiness and a slight hint of sweetness. This tea stands out in the world of black teas for its lack of astringency, making it a gentle yet flavorful choice suitable for both new tea drinkers and connoisseurs alike.

Keemun, a quintessential black tea, originates from the Anhui province in China. Known for its delicate crafting process which was perfected in the late 19th century, keemun quickly became a beloved staple in the West, particularly noted for its presence in the classic English Breakfast blend. Historically, this tea was prized for its uniquely subtle smoky flavor, balanced with a hint of sweetness—a profile developed through meticulous oxidation processes unique to its region. In contrast to other robust teas from regions like Assam or Darjeeling, keemun maintains a softer, more rounded mouthfeel, making it a favorite for those who appreciate a less astringent taste.

We love keemun for its smooth sophistication and its comforting, smoky aroma that pairs wonderfully with a quiet morning or a peaceful afternoon break. It's a tea that invites you to slow down and savor each sip, appreciating the craftsmanship that goes into producing its delicate flavors.

Did you know that keemun was once considered the pinnacle of black tea in England before being blended into what we now recognize as English Breakfast? Its journey from a luxury good in the Qing Dynasty to a household staple in the West is a testament to its enduring appeal.
