Tea 101

Summary

Our organic Matcha is a testament to the traditional practices of Japanese tea cultivation, made exclusively from the Yabukita cultivar known for its quality and flavor. This Matcha is sweet, smooth, and robust with an intense green tea flavor, making it perfect not only for a traditional bowl of matcha but also for modern culinary uses like baking matcha shortbread cookies or blending into smoothies for a vibrant start to your day.

History

Matcha, the finely milled green tea, has a rich history that dates back to the Tang Dynasty in China where it was initially used as a medicinal drink. During the Song Dynasty, the method of making powdered tea from steam-prepared dried tea leaves became popularized. However, it was in Japan where matcha found its spiritual and cultural home. Zen Buddhists appreciated matcha's properties for aiding in meditation due to its moderate caffeine content, which promotes a calm alertness. The preparation and consumption of matcha evolved into a ceremonial art by the 15th century, particularly under the influence of tea masters like Sen no Rikyū, shaping the Japanese tea ceremony that we recognize today.

Across different cultures, the use of matcha has varied significantly. In traditional Japanese settings, it is whisked with hot water and served in a bowl as part of tea ceremonies, a practice that emphasizes mindfulness and aesthetics. Contrastingly, in modern Western cultures, matcha has been adapted into various forms such as lattes, smoothies, and even baked goods, showcasing its versatility beyond traditional boundaries.

Why We Love It

The bright, grassy flavor and gorgeous color of our matcha is an endless source of inspiration to us. We love it in lattes, ice cream, shortbread cookies, smoothies, and cheesecake. The fine powder blends beautifully into any recipe you might choose, from simple to intricate.

The More You Know

Did you know that Matcha played a significant role in the famous Japanese tea ceremony known as Chanoyu? This ceremony is more than just drinking tea; it's a choreographed art of serving and receiving tea to foster a deep spiritual and communal experience, reflecting the principles of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility.
