How to Make Roast Chai

Simmer 1 tablespoon of chai spice in 12 oz water for 3-5 minutes. Add 2-3 teaspoons of black tea (Jorhat Assam, or Rooibos for a decaf option) and steep for another 3-4 minutes. Stir in ½ cup milk and 1-2 teaspoons sugar (or to taste). Enjoy!

Tea 101

Summary

Roast Chai Masala is a unique twist on the traditional chai blend, offering a mellow alternative to the typical zesty profiles found in classic chai. This blend omits ginger and cardamom, instead focusing on a roasted melody of spices that suggest subtle hints of chocolate and coffee, especially when paired with a robust black tea like Assam. For those avoiding caffeine, substituting with Rooibos makes for an excellent choice. This blend is perfect for anyone looking to explore a different side of chai without the usual piquant kick.

History

Chai, a term for tea in many parts of the world, is deeply woven into the fabric of Indian culture, traditionally a sweet and spicy brew known as Masala Chai. This beverage has evolved over thousands of years, influenced by a myriad of cultures, including a significant transformation during the British colonial era when tea cultivation was introduced on a large scale in India. Roast Chai Masala, however, steps away from the conventional by roasting its spices, a method that enhances the earthiness and gives a comforting depth, reminiscent of a cozy, smoky atmosphere.

Across different cultures, chai recipes vary significantly, often reflecting local tastes and available spices. While traditional Indian chai bursts with bold spices like cardamom and ginger, our Roast Chai Masala takes a more subdued approach, focusing on the warmth of roasted spices which can be likened to the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee or rich dark chocolate. This divergence not only highlights the versatility of chai but also caters to a palate seeking solace in gentler, yet equally engaging flavor notes.

Why We Love It

XOXO Roast Chai for its soothing, rich flavor that makes every sip a warm embrace. The roasted spices bring out a complexity that is both unexpected and familiar, making it a perfect companion for chilly mornings or quiet evenings. It's versatile too—excellent on its own or as a base for various tea blends, and it can transform a simple cup of tea into an exotic escape. Plus, its caffeine-free potential with Rooibos means everyone can enjoy a cup, any time of day.

The More You Know

The heat from roasting causes the Maillard reaction, a chemical process that enhances the aroma of spices. This is why roasted spices often have a nutty, smoky, or slightly caramelized scent.
