Remove the pot from heat, then stir in 2-3 teaspoons of black tea (Jorhat Assam, or Rooibos for a decaf option). Cover and steep for 3-4 minutes. Next, stir in 4-6oz of milk. Sweeten to taste with your choice of sugar or honey. Strain the tea through a fine mesh strainer into a mug and enjoy!

Tea 101

Summary

Our Classic Chai is a robust blend that honors the traditional flavors. The inclusion of orange peel adds a subtle citrusy note that complements the warmth of the other spices, making it a unique yet familiar chai experience.

History

Chai, a word that simply means "tea" in Hindi, has roots that are deep in the history of the Indian subcontinent. The spicy, aromatic concoction we know today as chai has evolved from ancient Ayurvedic traditions that utilized spices for their health benefits. Originally, chai didn't contain any tea leaves and was purely a blend of spices and herbs. It wasn't until the British colonization of India, which brought with it the mass cultivation of tea, that the tea leaves found their way into the mix, transforming it into the beloved beverage known globally today. Across different regions, chai recipes vary significantly, reflecting local tastes and available spices. In some areas, a more peppery version prevails, while others might highlight sweeter or more floral notes.

Why We Love It

We love our Classic Chai for its vibrant kick and soothing warmth. It's the perfect pick-me-up on a chilly morning or a comforting brew for a lazy afternoon. The peppercorn brings a delightful heat that wakes up the senses, while the cardamom adds a layer of aromatic sweetness. Whether brewed strong and served with a splash of milk or simmered gently for a milder flavor, it's a versatile blend that invites you to customize to your taste.

The More You Know

Did you know that chai was popularized in the West largely through its portrayal in popular culture? Films and books that featured Indian life and traditions brought chai into the limelight, making it a symbol of Indian cuisine and culture on the global stage.
