Tea 101

Summary

Honeybush, an herbal tea from South Africa, is a close relative of rooibos but with a sweeter and more mellow flavor profile. This bush, scientifically known as *Cyclopia intermedia*, is renowned for its honey-like taste, making it a popular choice for caffeine-free herbal infusions. It's often enjoyed on its own or blended with other teas like rooibos, enhancing its natural sweetness and rich, earthy undertones.

History

Honeybush has a rich history rooted in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where it has been consumed for centuries. Initially, it was harvested wild, with knowledge of its sweet, soothing properties passed down through generations. The indigenous Khoisan people, known for their deep understanding of local flora, were the first to recognize and utilize the bush for its healthful benefits and pleasant taste. As European settlers arrived and colonization spread, honeybush tea gradually gained popularity beyond its native borders.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, honeybush began to be commercially cultivated, though it remained a largely regional specialty. Unlike its cousin rooibos, which saw a rapid rise in global popularity, honeybush has maintained a more niche appeal, cherished for its unique flavor and heritage. Its cultivation and preparation have evolved, but the traditional methods of sun-drying and fermenting the leaves to enhance their sweetness remain largely unchanged, preserving the authenticity of this South African gem.

Why We Love It

It's our go-to for a soothing, caffeine-free beverage that can be enjoyed any time of day. Whether steeped on its own for a cozy drink or blended with spices and other teas for a more complex flavor profile, honeybush never fails to impress. Its versatility also makes it a fantastic base for iced teas and chai masalas.

The More You Know

Did you know that honeybush is sometimes called the "Cape of Good Hope tea"? This nickname not only references its South African origins but also hints at the historical maritime route around the southern tip of Africa, which was crucial for spice trade.
