Spice 101

Summary

Our Harissa blend is a carefully crafted mixture that captures the essence of North African cuisine with a balanced heat that's not overwhelming. It includes Guajillo, Caraway, European Coriander, Smoked Paprika, Garlic, Paprika, Chili Pepper, Cumin, Kosher Salt, Citric Acid, and a hint of Indonesian Cinnamon. This blend is salt-free, emphasizing the natural flavors of the spices without overpowering them. The addition of citric acid introduces a subtle citrus note that brightens the overall flavor, making it a unique take on the traditional Harissa recipe.

History

Harissa, a fiery and aromatic condiment, is a staple in North African cuisine, particularly in countries like Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria. Its historical roots are deeply intertwined with the culinary traditions of these regions, where it has been used for centuries to add heat and depth to dishes. Originally, Harissa was likely developed as a means to preserve and enhance the flavors of available spices and chilies. Over time, it has evolved into a symbol of North African culinary identity, varying slightly in ingredients and preparation methods from one region to another, reflecting the local tastes and available resources.

In Tunisia, for example, Harissa is typically made with a heavier concentration of garlic, giving it a robust flavor that distinguishes it from its Moroccan counterpart, which might include more roasted red peppers for a sweeter undertone. This regional variation not only highlights the adaptability of Harissa but also its significance in the cultural gastronomy of North Africa. The blend's versatility and ability to complement a wide range of dishes have cemented its status as a beloved spice blend beyond its geographical origins.

Why We Love It

Having Harissa in your pantry is incredibly convenient because it combines all the dry ingredients you need in one blend. We love Harissa for its rich layers of flavor, seamlessly blending the warmth of chili peppers with earthy cumin and a bright hint of citrus. Whether it’s rubbed on grilled chicken, stirred into a hearty stew, or swirled into hummus, Harissa adds a vibrant kick that's hard to beat.

The More You Know

Did you know that Harissa can be transformed into a paste just by adding hot water, olive oil, and a squeeze of lemon? This paste can be used as a dynamic condiment, akin to how some might use hot sauce. It's a fantastic way to introduce a touch of North African flair to your meals.
