Spice 101

Hazelnut Dukkah is a traditional blend hailing from Egypt, offering a savory mix of herbs, spices, salt, and nuts that provides unique flavor and texture.

Dukkah, an Egyptian food staple, has roots that stretch deep into the the Middle East. Traditionally used as a dip with bread or fresh vegetables, this spice blend is thought to have been a favored spice mix in ancient Egypt. The name 'Dukkah' itself comes from the Arabic word for "to pound," reflecting the original method of preparation wherein spices and nuts were crushed together to form a coarse blend that is both aromatic and flavorful.

Across different cultures, Dukkah has been adapted and used in various ways, but its essence remains the same—a dry mix of nuts, spices, and herbs. In Tony Hill's "The Spice Lover's Guide to Herbs and Spices," Dukkah is highlighted for its unique ability to add texture and flavor to simple dishes, a testament to its enduring appeal across centuries and borders.

We adore Hazelnut Dukkah for its crunchy texture and robust flavor. It’s a fantastic way to add a quick twist to salads, an extra crunch to soups, or as a crust for meats and cheeses. Sprinkled over a soft goat cheese or used to coat a juicy chicken breast before roasting,

Did you know that Dukkah was traditionally used as a snack during travel in the desert? Its high nut content provided sustenance while the blend of spices kept the palate entertained during long journeys. Next time you’re on a road trip, consider swapping out the chips for some Dukkah and olive oil dip—travel like an ancient Egyptian!
