Pickling Spice

Our Pickling Spice is kind of a big dill! We’ve stepped up this British classic for modern palates — perfect for cucumbers, kohlrabi, and more. Spice Advice: Steep in cider vinegar to make a zippy condiment for salads, sandwiches, and slaws.

Spice 101

Our Pickling Spice blend is a carefully curated mix that includes crumbled Turkish bay leaves, yellow mustard seeds, Tellicherry black peppercorns, white peppercorns, allspice berries, dill seeds, and coarsely ground celery seeds. This combination creates a complex flavor profile that is both aromatic and capable of standing up to the pickling process.

Pickling Spice is a robust concoction that has been enhancing the flavors of pickled vegetables since the early 19th century in the United States. Originally crafted to make the most of the spices available during that era, it was a vital component in preserving foods before the advent of modern refrigeration. This blend, with its hearty ingredients, was designed to withstand the aggressive pickling process, ensuring that the flavors permeated through vegetables like cucumbers, melon rinds, and beets.

We love our Pickling Spice for its bold and dynamic flavor that brings a zesty kick to any pickling project. It's the secret weapon in our pantry for homemade pickles, offering a robust taste that infuses beautifully into a variety of vegetables. Whether we're pickling classic cucumbers or experimenting with more unusual choices like carrots and cauliflower, this spice blend ensures every jar is bursting with flavor.

Did you know that during the colonial era, pickling was a necessary method for preserving almost any type of food? Our Pickling Spice blend is inspired by those traditional recipes, which were essential for long sea voyages and winter food storage.

So far used it to make some "quickles" with yellow squash and carrots - CSA share is bountiful this year, so there will probably be more "quickling" 😉 -- pickling without doing the canning process. These came out good. Not certain what else I might do with it...made a brine recently for BBQ chicken, but used other whole spices I had for that, which came out great.

Store owner replied: Loving the word “quickling.” What a perfect combo. Yellow squash and carrots sound like such a fun, fresh use for the Pickling Spice. Can’t wait to hear what you try next as your CSA keeps on giving!

I love the Pickling Spice! Just canned 8 quarts of pickled beets. And earlier, quick cucumber pickles. Delicious!! Thanks so much to the sales person who helped me put an order together despite the sold out notice online. Cheers! For great product and service!!

I love to use this in my dill pickles that I make in the summertime and it’s a great addition to corned beef for just a little extra yum!

This pickle spice takes all of the work out of making pickles. Just add a tablespoon or more to the bottom of your pickle jars, fill with veggies, and top with brine! It is the perfect mix!

I have been using this pickling spice since 2010. I use it when making my corned beef it reminds me of my late grandmother. The smell reminds me of cooking in her kitchen as a young girl. The mixture is well balanced and the spices are chopped to the right size.

Great! Very close to the recipe we’d buy at the local cucumber farm near Seattle!
