History

Nutmeg's story begins on the tiny Banda Islands, part of today's Indonesia, where it was originally found and cultivated. European powers, recognizing its value, fought bitterly over control of the nutmeg-producing islands.

The use of nutmeg spread from Indonesia to the Middle East, thanks to Arab traders, and eventually to Europe, where it became a status symbol during the Elizabethan era. The Dutch eventually monopolized the nutmeg trade in the 17th century, going so far as to enforce the cultivation of nutmeg trees only in their controlled territories. This spice has seen a global journey, influencing cuisines and cultures from India to the Caribbean, where it's used in everything from spicy meat dishes to sweet desserts.
